DIY Tassels

Tassels are a fun way to add colour and texture to just about any craft project. I love the endless possibilities of making each and every tassel unique.

Read on to find out how to make your very own tassel using just about any yarn, trimmings, fabric scraps and embroidery threads.

You’ll need:

an assortment of yarn

embroidery threads

tapestry needle

scrap card

To begin cut out any scrap card or cardboard in your desired tassel length. Next select your mixed assortment of yarns and trimmings to wrap along the length of your cardboard template.

Wrap your yarn around the card template 4 to 5 times depending on how bulky you would like your tassels. Cut off the remaining yarn.

Cut a length of yarn ( I used two varying colours) to about 50 cm in length.

Inset the yarn under the top bundle of wrapped yarn.

Make a loop and tie a knot to hold the top threads and trimmings in place.

Cut along the bottom strands to release from the lower section of your card.

Tie a piece of 60cm yarn around the top of the bundle leaving about 2cm gap from the top knot.

Wrap the yarn around the tassel several times.

Tie a knot.

Use a tapestry needle to tuck and hide any loose ends into your wrapped yarn.

Trim the bottom of your tassels to an even length.

Use a tapestry needle to add beads and sequins for an extra pop of colour.

*I used beads with a 2.5mm hole size.

Tie a double knot to secure your beads, repeat with varying sized beads.

Take your tassels a step further by creating a tassel garland, key ring, earrings, necklace, bag charm and many more.
