How to overcome Adversity

Ever feel like your going 100mph? Each day just seems to be merging into one and your trapped in a whirlwind.
Over the the last few months I’ve faced a few personal battles whilst being engaged and planning our wedding. From this I have learnt that adversity is in fact a hidden gem in disguise. The gem is hidden under layers upon layers of ugly rocks waiting to be discovered. I’ve been digging hard to obtain the most precious gem stone. This gem stone contains the most precious traits from resilience, humility, strength, courage and compassion.

I spent days living in pure survival mode. Days became weeks and weeks became months. The pattern just kept repeating itself. I was trapped in a whirlwind. This was where I begun to dig for that hidden gem stone. Through courage, resilience and speaking to a close network of family and friends I made that life changing decision. It’s still sinking in as I venture into a new career path, one that is very different from teaching. Who knows what the future may hold but one things clear, I feel like a big weight has been lifted off my chest.

I have learnt that adversity is truly a blessing in disguise. It may sound cliche but I do believe that everything happens for a reason. These failures are simply experiments that didn’t go as planned. Look at the likes of Emily Dickinson, Mary Kay Ash, J.K Rowling and Beyonce. Theses women never gave up, they thrived from failure, they persevered, they failed repeatedly. They kept on going. I’m not saying that we’re all going to be the next Queen B or J.K Rowling, this is just a mere example of how others overcame adversities which life threw at them.
Success usually comes from overcoming adversity. It starts with how you interpret concepts in life. These three simple reflections & strategies allowed me to reflect upon my next steps and future career aspirations.

Mindset is everything

Having a clear mindset is key for overcoming adversity. Channeling your focus on the positives truly helps you mentally and physically. Avoid negative elements and discussions at this moment in time. This does nothing for your mindset except for stressing you out. Change your focus. Keep a goal setting diary. Write down just one or two positive things from your day, a brief walk in the park or a compliment from a colleague can be classed as a positive! Write it down! Try not to think about the bigger picture. Work on the smaller details. This allowed me to focus more on what I truly want with my next step.

Set meaningful goals

Meaningful goals are important, they should be mini achievable goals. When we set superficial goals, we don’t follow though. Focus more on things like family, love, security and things which you won’t give up on. You need to be accountable for each goal otherwise it just becomes a dream, hope or wish.

Follow your gut instincts

You need to trust what your heart knows, picture yourself accomplishing those goals that will progress you to achieving your inner heart desires. It’s always good to discuss your future aspirations with friends and family, just remember that they don’t necessarily know whats best for you. You can take their advice into consideration, they may be more experienced than you, but trust more in yourself, no one knows you better than you! When it comes to making big life decisions, only you know what’s in your heart.

To everyone reading this, I do not believe that your life, has been or will always be free from adversity. Sometimes life gives you lemons, make that lemonade and prove life wrong. I believe that we are here for a reason, it may be to put a smile on someone else’s face, we may be here to change the World or even make a difference in someones  life. One thing I know for certain is that when we climb that ladder and reach the top just like in the game of snakes and ladders we may fall and feel like it’s all crashing down. Some tumbles are bigger than others, they may hurt a little or hurt a lot! Don’t give up, pick your self back up and climb that ladder. Welcome that fall, embrace the crash, eat that tub of ice cream, let it all sink in knowing that when you do finally get back up your a force to be reckoned with. You’ve overcome adversity and your now Wonder Woman. Your a warrior with the best gem stone in the World.

P.S

How do you overcome adversity? Share your tips. I’m sure that some of you may need a little pick me up. It’s always good to hear what others have tried out and tested. We all go through adversity at some point in our lives, we need to keep level headed and know that success comes from failure, just remember that no one is perfect! How boring would the World be if everyone was perfect and had no flaws!
