There are so many posts about the health benefits of knitting on the internet, yes indeed there are probably a kazillion posts about knitting for mindfulness; but this one comes from a very different perspective. It comes from a knitting enthusiast who has a very trustworthy feline assistant that loves high quality wool which are ethically sourced and come in sustainable packaging.
What if I told you that the knitting community has come on in leaps and bounds and that the stereotypical knitter is certainly not your grandma. What if I told you that over 38 million consumers aged 20 and over, from young women, men and celebrities love knitting as a hobby. The Marvels Jessica Jones aka Krysten Ritter has built up a massive following from the knitting community, she has her very own hashtag #krystenknitter on Instagram.
THE SECRET OF LIVING IS GIVING
Mindfulness can be described as focusing ones energy on the present moment, I call it a state of calmness where your mind is free from all negative thoughts. It can be seen as state of meditation.
For me knitting is simply more than interlocking and looping a skein of yarn to form a new fabric, it’s about the cognitive experience of mixing up knit and purl stitches to create a complex pattern, it’s about unwinding after a busy day with a cup of tea and creating a new piece of clothing and or accessory to give to a loved one. It’s the chunky hand knitted blanket which I gave to mother for Christmas, it’s the extremely chunky red glitter cardigan mother knitted for my 9th Christmas, it’s the knitted baby blanket passed down from myself to my siblings.
My love for knitting is more than the items knitted on my big chunky needles, it’s more than seeing a finished piece. It’s about the cosiness of the wool in my hands, the interlocking stitches and the thought of who will be wearing the item. It’s a comforting hobby that gives so much more back to friends, family and the community.
There is always a need for knitted items, from gifted pieces, knitting kits received at birthdays and Christmas and hand me downs. Neonatal units around the World are constantly in need of knitted items to keep premature babies warm, from knitted hats, blankets and cute knitted socks. Why not keep your left over yarns and knit for a good cause.
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF KNITTING?
Imagine touching a soft merino wool and looping it around your fingers, now imagine holding a sustainable knitting needle made of wood in your other hand. It’s super duper cosy as the natural soft fibres drapes over your skin. Choosing fun colours and super chunky yarn brings about a cathartic release. It’s ever so soothing and calming especially when knitting with a group of friends, in-between coffee breaks and sometimes on your daily commute to work (on a train that is).
Now I’m not here to repeat all the health benefits of knitting as there are so many on the internet, this is certainly not a click bait post, I bring to you the health benefits of knitting from my own personal experience. Yes you read that right, knitting has been proven to relax my mind and slow me down in regards to my overthinking. I’m known to be an over-thinker and enjoy writing a lot of to-do lists. This can be seen as a good trait but I kid you not, if I do not complete a task on my list, or if something seems out of place I do start to have a mini bit of anxiety. For those of you having a stressful time at work, or in other parts of your life I recommend picking out a nice knitting needle and a good high quality yarn, the experience is one of joy and is highly self rewarding especially after solving a new stitch technique.
Knitting teaches you about perseverance and enables you to become more resilient. Learning a new and complex stitch pattern is usually stronger than the desire to give it up easily. Seeing the pattern come to life and overcoming a challenging technique brings a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment like no other. Now imagine bringing these skills to your daily life experience. Knitting makes you calm and patient. It’s a good life skill to have and one which can be learnt with a group of people over tea and coffee or even a glass of procecco.
