Top things to do in Lake Como

I have fallen in love with Italy all over again, this time round it feels more like a real-life fairytale. We spent the August bank holiday weekend in Lake Como for our first wedding anniversary and the location did not disappoint.

The houses and villas scattered around the lake were just so magical, it felt like I was in a Disney movie. I just can’t compare the landscape to anywhere I’ve ever been.

Lake Como is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway with a vast array of things to see and do.

Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, located at the foot of the Swiss Alps. We drove to the lake from Milan. The drive had to be one of the most breathtaking drives in the world. The lake is surrounded by dainty little villages making it hard to choose where to explore as each little village has its own unique charm.

A truly romantic town with a stunning pathway looping throughout the town. Varenna is much more calmer with less tourists and more locals. You get a real feel of Lake Como in this picturesque mini village, it was much less crowded for the specific time of year especially during the later hours of the morning.

We ventured towards the departure point for the ferries through the walk of lovers, a small footpath with red fenced promenade featuring steep and quaint corners. I danced my way under the archway before stopping to view the sights of Bellagio from afar.

We took a short ferry ride from Varenna to Bellagio. Known for its cobbled lanes, designer stores and stunning views of the lake, Bellagio is often referred to as the pearl of Lake Como, city of silks. We spent the afternoon walking up the steep hill and past the church to find the scenic street shot of Bellagio. The view is situated near Trattoria San Giacomo.

Bellagio came to life later on in the evening with a spectacular sunset.

Lenno is home to the world famous Villa del Balbianello, located just above the tip of the small woodlands of Dosso d’Avedo. The most gorgeous villa I’ve ever feasted my eye on. with arches wrapped in vines, spectacular gardens and jaw dropping views of the lake.

This villa would make that perfect fairytale wedding location. It’s truly a treat to visit this villa especially if you are into your action movies. You might spot a couple of famous backdrops around the villa.

Located in the heart of Lecco, NH Lecco Pontevecchio couldn’t have been a better location. It’s within easy reach of Varenna by Car and also a short train ride to the ferry ports. Lecco is the perfect spot to unwind, but also to explore other areas of the lake.

The hotel is very modern with spacious rooms and a good tasty selection of food for breakfast. This made an excellent base for exploring Lake Como without digging a big hole in your purse.

Depending on which time of the year you visit, make sure to pack all the usual gear minus the heels.

Lake Como has a lot of steps and walkway paths which go up hill, so comfy walking shoes are a must, especially if you’re going on a hike to chase after the glorious sunsets.
